Wilderness Botswana launches The Sanctuary at Mombo
Wilderness has announced the launch of The Sanctuary at Wilderness Mombo, a transformative new wellness destination in the heart of Botswana’s Okavango Delta.
Opened last month, The Sanctuary marks the first expression of Wilderness’s renewed focus on wellbeing – redefining the intersection of wild luxury and holistic health.
“With this launch, we are not simply adding or enhancing spa facilities to our camp; we are strengthening our intention to create transformative journeys that nurture mind, body and soul. Mombo has always set the benchmark for the African safari; now it is helping redefine it,” said Alexandra Margull, Wilderness Chief Operating Officer.
Set within one of Africa’s most extraordinary ecosystems, Wilderness Mombo provides a fitting stage for this evolution. Designed to inspire stillness and reconnection, the new space blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings through organic architectural forms, natural timber and open-air spaces that evoke calm and groundedness. Every detail has been considered to restore harmony – from sweeping Delta views to the soothing interplay of light, sound and texture.
Guests are invited to embark on an immersive journey of renewal, with world-class facilities that balance energy and rest. These include a lap pool for both exercise and reflection, a traditional sauna paired with an ice bath for hot–cold contrast therapy, dedicated treatment rooms, a couple’s suite, meditation cocoons, an air-conditioned gym with panoramic views, and an open-air yoga deck.
A nourishing deli and juice bar complement the wellness experience, alongside a Remedy Bar inspired by ancient healing traditions and local botanicals such as wild sage, indigo dye bush and jackalberry fruit. Here, storytelling and sensory rituals merge to awaken the senses and enrich the holistic journey.
Best of both worlds
Treatments draw on Africa’s timeless wisdom while incorporating cutting-edge skincare science. TheraNaka amenities, infused with responsibly sourced indigenous botanicals, blend scent, sound and touch into deeply restorative journeys. Esse, a pioneer in biotechnology skincare, offers facials that rebalance and rejuvenate the skin for lasting radiance. Signature experiences such as the African Fusion Body Massage with marula-herb oils, the Tree of Life Journey inspired by the mystical baobab, and Couples Connect using handcrafted “swarthout” wooden implements, bring layers of cultural meaning and sensory depth to each treatment.
Thoughtfully designed with a light footprint and deep reverence for its natural surroundings, The Sanctuary nurtures both body and spirit while remaining in harmony with the environment that inspires it.
Further enhancing the sensory experience, a specially commissioned album by sound composer Mikhaela Faye adds a powerful auditory layer. Sanctum, recorded entirely during her stay at Mombo, captures the authentic rhythms of the Delta – from a lion’s throaty roar and the clash of elephant tusks to the delicate chorus of weaver birds, the haunting cry of a fish eagle, and the rhythmic drums from the boma. The result is an acoustic immersion that surrounds guests with the soul of the Delta and evokes a deep connection to place – one that lingers long after departure.
The Sanctuary at Wilderness Mombo reflects the brand’s commitment to wellness that is instinctive, elemental and intimately connected to nature. While every detail is designed to support wellbeing, the experience also honours the spirit of Mombo – The Place of Plenty – where transformative journeys unfold in one of Africa’s most awe-inspiring and wildlife-rich settings.
The Sanctuary at Wilderness Mombo is only the beginning. With wellness expanding across the portfolio, a sister sanctuary will open at Wilderness Bisate in Rwanda in early 2026 – a further affirmation of Wilderness’s commitment to the evolution of mindful, purposeful travel.
