Chart of the Week
The Quality of Life Index estimates the overall quality of life in a city, considering factors such as purchasing power, pollution, housing affordability, cost of living, safety, healthcare, commute times, and climate.
Based on user surveys and data collected by Numbeo, the index reflects the perceptions of residents and visitors. It is calculated using a weighted formula that combines these elements into a single score, with higher values indicating better living conditions. Only cities with sufficient data and contributions are assessed.
Although only 11 large African cities were ranked, Windhoek was ranked second herein, with fair scores across key indicators such as pollution, healthcare, and cost of living. The city also benefited from a relatively high climate index and low traffic congestion compared to many other African cities. While not the top performer in any single category, its consistently solid performance across multiple areas contributed to its overall ranking.
However, this data is inherently skewed, given that only residents with access to the internet can participate in the Numbeo survey, with subjective perceptions playing a significant factor in the index results. Nonetheless, Namibia and Windhoek have existed on Numbeo for several years with manual price data and perceptions updated at several points in time, and the Namibian website visitors perceive a greater quality of life than website visitors of other African cities.
