Import of raw bran and milling by-products from Angola suspended

The Ministry of Agriculture officially suspended the importation of raw bran and milling industry by-products intended for animal feed from Angola. The suspension, announced via Veterinary Public Notification No. 1 of 2026, took effect on 5 January 2026 and will remain in place until further notice.

The Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS) expressed serious concerns regarding the importation process. According to the official notification, it has been observed that the movement of bran into Namibia from Angola has occurred without full compliance with the import requirements specified in issued permits. This non-compliance is cited as posing significant disease risks to Namibia’s national animal population.

In a statement issued by Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Kenneth Kennedy Shoombe, the ministry confirmed that all previously issued import permits for these products are now cancelled. The DVS explained that this regulatory measure is necessary to facilitate a period of engagement between the veterinary authorities of Namibia and Angola. The aim of these discussions is to allow both countries to agree on a way forward regarding the legal importation of these products into Namibia.

Importers and stakeholders affected by this directive are urged to contact the Veterinary Import Control Office for further information. Inquiries can be directed via telephone on 061 208 7890/1/2 or by email at DVS3@mawlr.gov.na

The Directorate of Veterinary Services is headquartered at Government Office Park, Luther Street, Windhoek.
