Nkurenkuru gala raises over half a million dollars for development

In addition to the funds raised, Namport pledged to renovate the council hall at an estimated value of N$527,000. A private donor also committed to donating a bull, though the value of the animal was not disclosed.

Speaking at the event, Nkurenkuru Town Council CEO Petrus Sindimba encouraged those present to continue supporting the town’s annual expo, scheduled to take place from 27 June to 6 July 2025. He said only a limited number of exhibition stalls remain available, especially in the entertainment section. The official opening of the expo is expected to be officiated by former President Hifikepunye Pohamba or his representative.

A keynote address delivered on behalf of Pohamba by his special advisor, Fransis !Goaseb, praised the town's leadership and pointed to ongoing developments as proof of progress. He noted that a new mall is expected to be constructed at Erf 2398 in Nkurenkuru Extension 6 and that a hotel has recently been completed in Extension 3, with another under construction nearby.

Pohamba further commended efforts to meet housing demand, highlighting that over 500 prospective homeowners have already registered interest in 172 new homes planned by the National Housing Enterprises (NHE) in Extension 3. He called on developers allocated residential plots to expedite construction, citing the urgency of addressing housing shortages in a town with just over 10,000 inhabitants.

“I echo the sentiments of President Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah that ‘we are few people in Namibia to be poor’, and indeed, we are too few in Nkurenkuru to be without housing or basic services,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, ReconNamibia Assistant Operations Manager Muundu Kasera reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the Kavango regions. The oil and gas exploration company pledged N$100,000 towards the council’s development initiatives. Kasera highlighted the company's ongoing community investments, which include 36 solar-powered boreholes, 17 student sponsorships, and donations to schools and health programmes.

“This event reflects the power of collaboration,” Kasera said. “We are proud to stand with Nkurenkuru in building a resilient and thriving future.”
