Cabinet broadens green economy mandate
Cabinet has approved the establishment of a Green Industries Council to replace the former Green Hydrogen Council, signalling a shift in government's approach to the country's green economy ambitions.
The announcement was made by information Minister Emma Theofelus during this week's Cabinet briefing, in which she communicated resolutions from the 12th and 13th Cabinet meetings held on 28 April and 6 May 2026, chaired by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
Cabinet said it had taken note of the current status of the green industry sector in Namibia, with particular focus on development of the industry and the key policy, institutional and investment priorities required to enable it to achieve its strategic objectives of industrialisation, economic diversification and job creation.
The new council will oversee and guide Namibia's broader green industrialisation agenda, with a mandate covering policy coordination, institutional alignment and investment priorities.
The Director General of the National Planning Commission will chair the council, which will draw membership from across government.
Members will include the ministers of finance, mines, agriculture, environment, trade and international relations, as well as environment. The Attorney General and the Governor of the Bank of Namibia will also serve on the council.
