Middle East turmoil drives SA fuel hikes

South Africa's Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has announced fuel price increases across the board, with no relief for motorists as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to rattle global energy markets.

Petrol 93 and 95 increased by R3.27 per litre, whilst diesel (0.05% sulphur) and diesel (0.005% sulphur) rose by R5.27 per litre.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, accounts for roughly 20% of the world's fuel supplies. Its closure, linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East, has sent ripple effects across regional fuel markets.

Namibia is yet to announce its May fuel price adjustment. Adjustments typically come into effect on the first Wednesday of each month.

In April, the ministry of mines and energy announced increases effective 1 April 2026, citing under-recoveries across all grades. Petrol rose by N$2.50 per litre, whilst both diesel grades increased by N$4.00 per litre. In Walvis Bay, petrol is currently priced at N$22.08 per litre, diesel 50ppm at N$23.63 per litre, and diesel 10ppm at N$23.73 per litre. Prices across the rest of the country were adjusted accordingly.
