Capricorn Foundation invests N$1.17 million to support the RuralRevive Initiative

The Capricorn Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to economic development and community upliftment by investing a further N$1.17 million in the RuralRevive Initiative in Maltahöhe, supporting two work packages: Horticulture and Waste Management. This investment aligns with the Foundation’s focus on economic advancement and strengthens its existing partnership with the Wolwedans Foundation.

RuralRevive is an initiative of the Wolwedans Foundation’s Vision 2030 – The AridEden Project - that seeks to develop a circular economy and create sustainable entrepreneurial and employment opportunities in and around Maltahöhe across five key areas: Commerce, Community, Conservation, Culture, and Consciousness.

The Capricorn Foundation was the first local private sector corporate donor to join the RuralRevive Initiative, pledging N$1 million in its 2023/2024 financial year. With this latest investment, the Foundation’s total contribution has now exceeded N$2.1 million, showing its commitment to creating positive change.

The horticulture work package aims to strengthen local food systems through the RuralRevive Campus and the new Trading Hub. These facilities will support local farmers by helping them grow food, offering training, and connecting them to markets. The Trading Hub will act as a main location for selling fresh produce, food preservation, and engaging the community with open markets held every two weeks. The initiative also includes building a training facility at a farm close to Maltahöhe to improve agricultural skills and promote sustainable farming practices.

The Waste Management work package aims to improve local waste systems and promote recycling. A new recycling centre in Maltahöhe and a depot in Mariental will help with collecting, sorting, and compressing waste for transport. With help from the technical partner Rent-A-Drum, the project will also involve the community by offering payments for collecting recyclables, providing vocational training, and running awareness campaigns. This approach addresses environmental issues while creating job opportunities and building community pride.

Marlize Horn, executive officer of the Capricorn Foundation said by investing in horticulture and waste management, it was helping to build a resilient Namibia.

“The Capricorn Foundation is proud to deepen our support for RuralRevive. This initiative is a shining example of how collaboration can drive sustainable change. By investing in horticulture and waste management, we are helping to build a resilient, inclusive economy in Namibia’s desert regions, one that empowers communities and protects the environment.”

Stephan Brückner, chairman of the Wolwedans Foundation, expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the Capricorn Foundation. “The Capricorn Foundation’s investment helps us grow our impact and turn our vision of building a more inclusive and equitable desert-based economy into reality. Together, we create opportunities for self-reliance, dignity, and long-term sustainability. We are excited that Capricorn paves the way, hopefully encouraging more Namibian corporates to join the RuralRevive initiative.
