Govt commissions new power connections in Zambezi

Phillipus Josef

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy, Natangwe Ithete, yesterday launched new household electrification projects in Kongola, Zambezi Region.

Speaking at the event, Ithete said government’s goal is for every home in Namibia to have electricity by 2040. He noted that in Zambezi, out of more than 37 000 households, only about 13 500 are connected, leaving thousands without power.

The projects launched yesterday included new connections in Kongola, Bukalo and Nampengu, as well as electrification for schools in Old Masokotwani, Kahunikwa, Nsundwa, Ikaba and Malal Nkanga. He added that solar systems will be installed in remote areas where homes are scattered.

“Electricity is not a luxury; it is something that makes schools, clinics and businesses work. Whether it comes from the main grid or from solar, what matters is that people receive the service,” he told those present.

The electrification programme continues today in Kavango West, where 195 households in Nkurenkuru will be connected. In addition, 80 households in Sikondo village will benefit.

Ithete will also preside over these connections.

He called on communities to work together, saying development belongs to everyone. “When the light shines, it shines for all. This is our shared future,” he said.
