Central bank warms up to PayPal
The Bank of Namibia (BoN) has initiated efforts to introduce digital payment services, enabling Namibians to make online and in-person purchases using mobile devices.
BoN Governor Johannes !Gawaxab shared these plans during a Parliamentary Committee on Economy, Industry, and Public Administration, where he outlined the central bank’s activities for the year. “The central bank is collaborating with the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology to attract platforms like PayPal, Google Pay, and Apple Pay to establish operations in Namibia,” according to a National Assembly statement.
Communications minister Emma Theofelus earlier this year highlighted the need for improved access to online financial platforms. “Many talented Namibians, including YouTube content creators, cannot monetise their work due to payment restrictions. Freelancers and remote workers also face challenges receiving payments because services like PayPal are not available in Namibia,” she noted.
